Guttering

Photo courtesy of Northern Bricklaying and CarpentryBefore you engage the services of a guttering contractor, ensure you call Residential Roofing Solutions. We are professional roof plumbers, not just unqualified handymen or guttering installers.  Roof plumbers make and install guttering, design and install guttering and install stormwater drainage systems.  We can also help with you designing a rainwater catchment system, if you decide to install a rainwater tank.

Guttering is an important component of your roof and one that needs to be carefully considered.  There are a variety of materials that are suitable, such as stainless steel, plain zinc aluminum alloys (Zincalume) or zinc aluminum with colour applied (Colorbond).

Gutter, downpipes and general rainwater products are very important assets on any home where a large volume of water falls on the roof area. Competently fitted gutter and rainwater fixtures can protect the building and collect and channel the excess water. We are ready to fit an extensive choice of gutter styles, from the more traditional colonial styles to todays modern contemporary design.

It is also a good idea to get a gutter protection system that will protect your guttering from debris.

Gutter Profiles
Gutter, downpipes and general rainwater products are very important assets on any home as a large volume of water falls on all roof areas. There are a wide range of profile and colours available to suite anyone's creative requirements. Listed below are the most commonly used in both the residential and commercial industries.

Square-line gutter is a square front gutter that is slotted and needs to be folded around corners, eliminating the use of external angles and fixed with concealed brackets. Ideal for garages and carports hiding the end or roof sheets, and provides a stylish accessory to any home or building

Slotted VFM or Emline gutter is available for areas of very high rainfall. It has excellent water catching capabilities and includes slots in the gutter to allow water to overflow freely.Slotted VFM Gutter is available for areas of very high rainfall. It has excellent water catching capabilities and includes slots in the gutter to allow water to overflow freely.

Quad gutter is a very adaptable style of guttering. It blends perfectly with older style colonial and cottage style homes. It can also be used extensively in new home construction.

Traditional high front quad gutter is used on colonial style houses and is very popular on new home construction. It is a slotted gutter with overflow holes and a 115mm diameter.

OG Gutter is an attractive gutter which is often seen on Victorian, federation and older style buildings.

Half Round is a European style gutter with a semicircular design that is supported by external brackets. With a 150mm diameter it has a greater water capacity and the speed of the water travel is greater than a conventional gutter allowing to clear debris and silt. The great advantage of having this cylindrical design is that it has a self cleaning feature. Half Round Gutter is particularly suitable for Spanish, Tuscan, and modern style homes. However, it has also been fitted to many industrial and office type buildings because of its clean, smooth shape and practicability

Ace guttering profiles
Nu-Line is a gutter and fascia in one. It is a gutter designed for direct installation to roof rafters, without the use of timber fascia. Also known as fascia gutter or eaves gutter.
Mini-Line is a smaller version of Ace Nu-Line Gutter, it has a similar front profile with a flat back to fit flush to the fascia using concealed or external brackets. Ace Mini-line rainwater capacity is approximately 20% more than 115mm Quad Gutter and with overflows designed in the front of Mini-Line makes it ideal for heavy rainfall areas.

Downpipes
There are a wide range of downpipes for a variety of applications. Square, rectangular and round downpipes are available to suit any style of home, building or factory. Sizes available range to suit any requirements from small drainage up to large factory applications.
Rain heads
Rainheads are an essential design element for buildings where internal box or trough gutters are used. A rainhead or sump is a container located between the gutter and downpipe that aids the flow of water away from the roof. It acts as an external overflow point to minimise water surges into the stormwater system and aid the flow of water down the downpipe. The outside positioning of rainheads means that they minimise the risk of water overflow inside a building. Furthermore, the addition of an overflow provision provides even greater protection against water overflow in extreme conditions.

Maintenance

Metal Roofing
Although we recommend re-roofing over roof repairs, particularly when dealing with an old roof close to or beyond its life expectancy, Residential Roofing Solutions will carry out economical roof repairs in an attempt to prolong the life of a roof as long as possible.

Repairs include:

Removing roofing nails and replacing them with roofing screws.

Replacing rusted roof sheets and ridge capping

Re-lapping old metal roofs

High pressure cleaning

Replacement of Barge Boards & Fascias
Quite often barges become weather beaten and rot gets to the boards and fascias, requiring replacement. Residential Roofing Solutions believes replacement with new timber or metal Colorbond is the best way to prevent this type of deterioration from happening again. With the timber pre-primed and ready for painting you can choose any colour you wish to complement the building’s existing design.

Gutter Cleaning
With maintenance contracts arranged by request, Residential Roofing Solutions are known to be reliable, safe, gutter cleaners and recommend the procedure occurs every three months. Superior Gutterguard installation is available to you if required. All Residential Roofing Solutions cleaning procedures include the cleaning out of downpipes and even stormwater drains.

Asbestos Fibro Roofing & Guttering Replacement

What is asbestos and how was it used?

One of the most commonly used building products in Australia from the 1940s until the late 80s was 'fibro', a bonded product containing around 15% asbestos. Fibro was widely used as wall and ceiling sheeting in houses, workplaces and government buildings because of its strength and resistance to chemicals and heat. In addition to fibro sheeting, asbestos was also used in roofing ('Super Six' sheeting).

Fibro is a bonded product and therefore does not present any concerns when left undisturbed. However, home renovators are advised to seek the assistance of experienced tradespeople such as Residential Roofing Solutions when seeking to remove or repair this product.

The asbestos-based roof sheeting product - because it is exposed to the elements - will suffer weathering and has a limited life.

Things to keep your eye on

Hail damage to your roof can be as bad as waterblasting. Call a licensed asbestos removal contractor such as Residential Roofing Solutions immediately if the hail was heavy.

Watch for weathering. Surface weathering can lead to the release of asbestos fibres from roofs. Weathered asbestos products can release fibres when disturbed, such as in the removal of an asbestos roof or gutters.

Fire damage. Fire damaged property containing asbestos product could result in loose asbestos fibres due to intense heat. A licensed asbestos contractor must be used for cleaning up.

Keep guttering (and downpipes) in good repair.

As asbestos fibres collect in gutters after heavy rain, guttering and downpipes should be in good repair on buildings with asbestos roofing. Downpipes should not run into garden beds or water tanks!

When to coat asbestos products and when to remove & replace

Coating fibro products is not recommended. You should only coat fibro products if they’re in sound condition and then only to waterproof them.

Risks associated with installed, undisturbed asbestos products are small. Even weathered asbestos roofing does not release many airborne fibres unless the material is either disturbed or handled in a way that promotes the release of fibres.

Coating is not considered necessary on health grounds. Surface coatings, however, can extend the life of asbestos products and may improve their appearance. Special sealants only should be used on asbestos material, as ordinary paints do not bond well to the surface of weathered asbestos cement products.

Check if your asbestos roofing needs to be replaced. Roofing that has weathered to the point where it is structurally unsound and no longer waterproof should be replaced.

The resale value of your property will increase substantially once asbestos removal has taken place, with other benefits including:

- Prevention of any asbestos related illness

- Tank rainwater unable to be contaminated

- No airborne fibres left within the property

- Removal of weight and stress from roof timbers (asbestos weighs up  to ten times as much as a metal roof)
